Is Low Testosterone Stalling Your Weight Loss?

You’ve been exercising regularly. You’ve been following a healthy diet. You’ve been doing everything you’re supposed to — yet the scale has barely budged. If that sounds familiar, your testosterone level just might be to blame.

While it’s commonly known as the “male sex hormone,” women produce (and need) testosterone, too. And if levels are abnormally low, it can make it a lot harder to lose weight, especially as we get older and our hormone levels naturally decline.

At STL Medical Weight Loss, Joseph Moleski, DO, and Laura Howard, FNP, have the advanced training and skills required to identify the root causes of weight loss challenges so they can be addressed. Here, learn the surprising ways low-T could be affecting your own weight-loss journey.

Testosterone and weight: understanding the link

Most people know testosterone plays a pretty significant role in how your body builds and maintains lean muscle mass. What you might not know is that muscle tissue is much better at burning calories compared to fatty tissue.

It makes sense, then, that the more muscle tissue you have, the better you are at burning off calories that could otherwise be converted to fat. And, since testosterone improves muscle mass, it’s also easy to see how normal testosterone supports weight management over time.

On the flip side, when testosterone levels decline, you can wind up losing muscle mass and gaining body fat, especially around the belly and waistline. At the same time, this change in body composition makes it harder to burn calories — and easier to gain weight.

If your testosterone levels are low, even following a healthy diet, counting your calories, and exercising regularly may not yield the weight-loss results you’re looking for. Plus, low testosterone affects energy levels, increasing fatigue, making it harder to stay active, and making workouts feel much more challenging.

Low energy also increases the likelihood you’ll reach for unhealthy carb-rich foods for a quick burst of energy that, unfortunately, fuels fat storage, too.

Optimizing hormone levels to support weight loss

Fortunately, there are some things you can do to improve testosterone levels and get your weight-management plan back on track. For many people, truly optimizing hormone levels involves a combination of lifestyle changes and medical treatment.

Regular physical activity, especially strength training, promotes natural testosterone production while preserving lean muscle mass. Getting ample high-quality sleep is equally important: Poor sleep habits don’t just cause daytime fatigue that makes workouts harder — they’ve also been linked to hormonal imbalances and increased difficulty with managing weight.

Nutrition also plays a critical role. A balanced diet that includes plenty of protein, healthy fats, whole grains, and a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables supports healthy hormone production, ramps up metabolism, and reduces inflammation that can interfere with weight management.

That said, while lifestyle improvements are important for hormone production and overall wellness, they’re not always enough to address low testosterone-related weight challenges. That’s when hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can play a supportive role.

HRT helps supplement the testosterone your body produces naturally, elevating levels to a healthy range to improve energy, support muscle maintenance, enhance exercise performance, and complement other weight-loss efforts. HRT is dosed like any medication, and regular check-ins with our team ensure your plan stays focused on your changing needs.
