3 Signs Your Nutrition Plan Needs a Reset

As the saying goes, you are what you eat, and when your nutrition plan lacks essential micronutrients and macronutrients, it can have a major impact on your wellness. The problem: Signs of nutritional problems aren’t always easy to spot — unless you know what you’re looking for.

At STL Medical Weight Loss, Joseph Moleski, DO, and Laura Howard, FNP, help patients identify their personal nutritional issues and develop plans to address them and improve both physical and emotional health. Here, learn three subtle signs that could mean your nutrition plan needs a reset.

Food cravings or constant feelings of hunger

Macaroni and cheese, fast-food burgers, juicy grapes, chocolate cake — we all have our personal food cravings, and when they happen occasionally, it’s generally not a big deal. But if you find yourself intensely craving specific foods — healthy or unhealthy — on a frequent or continual basis, it could mean your nutrition plan is falling short of what your body needs.

Likewise, if you find yourself constantly thinking about food or feeling unsatisfied after your meals, it can also be a sign that your diet is “unbalanced.” Meals that are too low in protein, healthy fats, or fiber often leave us feeling hungry shortly after meals — even seemingly big meals.

Restrictive weight-loss plans frequently lead to cravings and continual feelings of hunger, but so do diets based largely on processed or convenience foods. What’s more, diets high in refined carbs can lead to spikes and crashes in blood sugar levels, triggering sudden cravings and nagging feelings of hunger.

Persistent fatigue

If you find yourself routinely feeling tired or worn out throughout the day despite getting a good night’s sleep, that’s another sign of a nutrition plan that’s not properly balanced

After all, food is your body’s primary source of energy, and what you eat matters just as much as how much and how often you eat. If your diet falls short in the type and amount of nutrients your body needs to function normally, it makes sense you’ll wind up feeling sluggish.

Low levels of iron and other micronutrients, or low protein intake, are common causes, as is dehydration. On the flip side, reaching for caffeine or sugar for an immediate energy boost can backfire, leading to crashes and more intense fatigue.

Unexplained moodiness

Your eating habits don’t just affect your physical health — they play a significant role in your emotional well-being and your moods, too. If bouts of irritability, mood swings, unexplained depression, or increased stress have become part of your daily experience, your nutrition plan could definitely be to blame, at least in part.

Persistent fatigue can definitely influence your moods, but the link between poor nutrition and emotional balance is even more direct. A lot depends on your blood sugar levels. When they fluctuate dramatically during the day, often due to too many refined carbs, you can be left feeling irritable, anxious, or depressed. Trouble concentrating enhances those feelings, too.

The foods you eat can also directly influence the chemicals responsible for mood regulation. For instance, research shows a diet low in key nutrients causes low levels of serotonin, a chemical largely responsible for mood regulation and helping keep depression at bay.

Bringing your nutrition back into balance

The symptoms of nutrition-based issues can be subtle and hard to detect, easily attributed to other issues, like workplace or family stress, inadequate sleep, or simply the effects of aging or chronic illness. The good news: Our team can identify nutritional deficiencies and other diet-related issues through advanced testing, using those results to develop a personalized nutrition plan tailored to your specific needs.
